AI jobs in Germany: ML engineer salaries and hiring (2026)

AI jobs in Germany in English: machine learning engineer salary data, where ML and LLM roles are, which skills employers ask for, and the Blue Card route.

AI jobs in Germany are one of the biggest parts of the English-speaking tech market. On Germany Dev Jobs on 16 October 2026 there were 381 machine learning and AI jobs at 192 companies in Germany and Austria, about one in nine of all tech jobs on the board, and 504 jobs mentioned LLMs. The machine learning engineer salary posted in job ads had a median of €69,000 a year, and the best-paid LLM and research roles went well past €150,000. Most ML engineers qualify for the EU Blue Card at the lower 2026 threshold.

This guide shows where the ML and AI jobs are, what they pay, what employers ask for and how to apply from abroad. All board numbers are our own data, from the ads on Germany Dev Jobs, not the whole market.

How many AI and machine learning jobs are there in Germany?

The Germany Dev Jobs report for October 2026, published on 15 October 2026, counted 3,583 live English-speaking tech jobs. Machine learning and AI was the largest named role category with 380 jobs (11%), ahead of DevOps and SRE (325) and backend (249). Data science added another 146 jobs.

By stack, ads that mention LLMs (504 jobs, 14%) were the fourth most common, after Python, AWS and Kubernetes. Python itself appeared in 38% of all ads.

On 16 October 2026 the live landing pages showed:

Page Jobs Companies Fully remote Visa sponsorship in ad
Machine learning and AI 381 192 90 6
ML and AI in Berlin 133 76 20 3
ML and AI in Munich 85 44 7 1
Data science 146 88 33 5
LLM jobs 504 231 145 11
PyTorch jobs 162 81 36 5

Only a few ads mention visa sponsorship directly, but many more employers hire from abroad: 42 of the 381 ML and AI jobs said you can apply from anywhere. Visa sponsorship is often decided per candidate, so don’t skip a good match just because the ad is silent. See visa sponsorship jobs for ads that say so.

Machine learning engineer salary in Germany

Germany’s official statistics do not separate ML engineers from other software and data roles, so the best direct evidence is what employers post. In the October 2026 report, 30 ML and AI ads and 29 data science ads stated a yearly salary in euros:

Role (ads with a salary) Median 10th to 90th percentile
Machine learning and AI (30) €69,000 €44,062 to €141,000
Data science (29) €68,600 €29,150 to €134,000
All tech jobs (369) €85,000 €35,493 to €160,000

Source: Germany Dev Jobs report, October 2026. The low end of these ranges can include working student and internship roles.

On the live pages on 16 October 2026, most posted salaries fell in these ranges:

  • ML and AI jobs: €47,000 to €146,000 a year
  • LLM jobs: €55,000 to €169,000 a year
  • PyTorch jobs: €60,000 to €208,000 a year
  • Data science jobs: €50,000 to €150,000 a year

Only about one in ten ads states a salary, so treat these figures as a guide. For context from official statistics, see our software engineer salary guide. Destatis publishes average gross annual earnings by industry: in 2025, full-time employees in the information and communication sector earned an average of €86,638 including special payments, against €64,441 across all industries (Destatis).

Junior, mid-level and senior ML salaries

The posted data is too thin to split ML salaries by seniority with confidence. In practice:

  • Entry level and graduates (including those with a master’s degree): offers near the bottom of the ranges above. A working student or internship in ML is a common way in; see our guide to junior and graduate developer jobs.
  • Senior, staff and research engineers: the upper part of the ranges, often over €100,000, especially for LLM training and inference, ML infrastructure and roles at well-funded AI companies.

Salary per month and after tax

A €69,000 salary is €5,750 gross a month over 12 payments. What you take home depends on tax class, church tax and health insurance. Use the salary after tax calculator to check any figure, and read our guide to negotiating a tech offer before you name a number, including how VSOPs at AI startups are taxed.

Data scientist salary in Germany

Data science and ML overlap. In the October 2026 report, the posted median for data science roles (€68,600) was almost the same as for ML and AI (€69,000). Ads for data science that state a salary ranged widely, from €29,150 at the 10th percentile to €134,000 at the 90th.

Data engineering is the third related path: 112 jobs on 16 October 2026, with most posted salaries between €54,000 and €97,000.

What German AI employers ask for

From the ads on the board, common requirements for ML and AI roles are:

  • Python first, plus SQL; PyTorch appeared in 162 ads on 16 October 2026 and TensorFlow in 65
  • LLM work: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), evaluation, fine-tuning, inference optimisation, agents
  • MLOps: Docker, Kubernetes, cloud (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure), experiment tracking, CI/CD for models
  • Software engineering quality: tests, code review, APIs; many “AI engineer” jobs are backend jobs with LLM integration
  • Research roles: publications at major conferences and usually a PhD
  • Domain knowledge for regulated industries such as health, finance, automotive, defence and industrial automation

German is rarely required: on 16 October 2026, 84 of the 85 ML and AI jobs in Munich asked for no German at all, and the board leaves out ads that need business-level German.

The EU AI Act

If you work on AI products in Germany, the EU AI Act affects your day-to-day work. According to the European Commission, it entered into force on 1 August 2024 and became applicable on 2 August 2026, with exceptions: bans on prohibited practices and AI literacy duties have applied since 2 February 2025, rules for general-purpose AI models since 2 August 2025, and some high-risk rules have longer transition periods to December 2027 and August 2028 (European Commission). Experience with model documentation, evaluation and risk assessment is increasingly useful on a CV.

Where AI jobs in Germany are

Berlin and Munich dominate. On 16 October 2026, Berlin had 133 ML and AI jobs on the board and Munich 85, together well over half of the national total. Other cities appear in smaller numbers.

Germany also has large public AI research centres, which are useful for networking, PhDs and research engineering jobs:

  • Berlin: BIFOLD, the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data
  • Munich: MCML, the Munich Center for Machine Learning
  • Stuttgart and Tübingen: Cyber Valley, which describes itself as Europe’s largest centre for AI and robotics research

Browse by city: Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Vienna.

AI jobs in Germany for international applicants

The EU Blue Card

Most ML and AI engineers can use the EU Blue Card. ICT professionals (ISCO-08 group 25) are on the shortage list, so a degree holder needs a gross salary of at least €45,934.20 a year in 2026, with Federal Employment Agency approval. Otherwise the standard threshold is €50,700 (Bundesagentur für Arbeit, § 18g Residence Act). IT professionals without a degree can qualify with three years of relevant experience in the last seven years.

Almost every ML salary on the board is above these thresholds. Test an offer with the EU Blue Card salary check, and read the EU Blue Card guide for the steps.

Applying from abroad

AI training and annotation work

Searches for “AI training jobs” often mean freelance data labelling or model evaluation work for AI companies. This is often paid per task through online platforms rather than employment with a German company, so it is not a basis for a German work visa. If you take such work while living in Germany, the rules for self-employment apply; see freelancing as a developer in Germany.
